Ancient Town of Iron Buddha It is located 36 km from the west of Zizhong County, which is famous for the Temple of Iron Buddha. Its construction was started during Wanli’s reigns of Ming Dynasty. The ancient name for the temple was the Old Store. In the thirty-ninth year of Kangxi’s reign of Qing Dynasty (1710), an iron Buddha, cast in the third year of Emperor Wanli’s reign of Ming Dynasty(1575)with 1.4 m high, was moved from the Taiping Yard 1,000 m from the county to the Xinjin Temple nearby. However, on the way to the Xinjin Temple, when resting at the Old Store, the Monk Rongliang could not carry the iron Buddha any more as if it had been rooted there, so Rongliang marked the enclosure of land there to build the temple named as Temple of Iron Buddha. The Town comprises of Upper Street, Middle Street, Lower Street, Yuwang Street, Zhucao Street and New Street with ancient buildings including Palaces of Nanhua, Yuwang, and Longevity, Chuanzhu Temple, Temple of Iron Buddha, Wangjia Shrine and Linjia Shrine. Streets in the town run vertically and horizontally. There are quiet and remote paths in the temples of the town echoing with each other at a distance. The Town of Iron Buddha was determined as the Ancient Town of History and Culture in 1986. |
